Unlike the Alien franchise (which I have already touched upon in one of these reviews), the Predator series has not really been one that has grabbed my attention. Indeed, I confess that I have never seen either Predator (1987) or Predator 2 (1990) all the way through, and I only watched Predators (2010) after picking it up for £3 in an Asda bargain bucket.

My largest window into this universe actually came largely thanks to Alien, via the Alien vs Predator films (which, as we know, bore mixed results). While AvP (2004) introduced us to an interesting concept that was fun and true to both source materials, AvP: Requiem (2007) was – to put it bluntly – horse-shit. It took that once interesting concept and made us hate it. Very rarely have I actively wished for a film to end.

You would think, therefore, that this limited and not always pleasant experience with the Predator series, coupled with the horrendous reviews that have been given to The Predator, would have put me off seeing this latest instalment. How wrong you are.

Despite the fact that it had everything going against it, I am actually pleased to report that The Predator was quite good fun. Of course, it is never going to win an Oscar – and it is pretty ridiculous at times. However, the action sequences were exciting, there was the right balance of real life and sci-fi and there was some quite good humour. As I have alluded to before, in an increasingly stressful world, this kind of sit back, switch off, popcorn entertainment is just what is needed – and the ending left me wanting more.

With Boyd Holbrook (of Narcos (2015 - ) and Logan (2017)) leading the line-up, this often cheesy entry into the sci-fi world has enough credibility to convince you to continue suspending your disbelief, and I would encourage everyone to ignore the critics and give this glorified B-movie a try.

In one line: What do the critics know anyway - remember when they initially panned The Dark Knight?
